6 Ways To Ease the Pain of a Migraine

Easing the Pain of Migraine Headaches

Anyone who has suffered from a migraine knows the debilitating pain and powerlessness that is felt. It's estimated that over 37 million people in the U.S. experience migraines, with approximately 2-3 million people experiencing chronic migraines. Whether you experience an occasional migraine or suffer from a migraine regularly, here are some tips to ease the pain and prevent a migraine from happening in the first place.

Shut Down Activity

When you feel a migraine coming on -- whether you experience an aura, mood swings, head or neck pain, and more -- start your own shut down procedure.

  • Turn out the lights. Migraine sufferers are very sensitive to light. Retreat to a dark room and lay down and sleep, if possible.
  • If you can't retreat to a quiet, dark place, apply an ice pack to your neck numb the pain or a hot pack to relax the muscles.
  • Have a small cup of coffee or tea, which has been shown to reduce the pain associated with a migraine.

Establish Healthy Sleep

Not only do migraines affect your sleep patterns, but not getting enough sleep can also trigger a migraine the next day. Make sure to get at least 8 hours of sleep a day and be sure to go to bed and get up at the same time each day.

Eat Better

Ensuring a consistent flow of calories and nutrients into the body can help you avoid a migraine. Eat regularly and be sure to eat as healthy as possible. Some people report that certain foods can trigger their migraines, such as chocolate and alcohol, so limit those foods and any others that may cause a migraine.

Keep Moving

Regular exercise is found to decrease the occurrence of migraines. It also helps to get you down to a healthy weight -- obesity is one factor of migraines. Any exercise will do as long as the body is moving regularly.

Engage in Acupressure

Acupressure is based on Chinese medicine that targets specific areas of the body. Acupressure can reduce tension in the body and improve circulation. With the Q-Flex, a migraine sufferer can apply pressure to their body themselves to help ease the pain associated with a migraine.

Eliminate Stress

Stress is one of the ultimate causes of migraines. To eliminate it, don't try to take on too much at work or at home and delegate as much as you can to lower your stress levels. Be sure to take regular breaks throughout the day and even try meditating or engaging in breathing exercises to help your body slow down.

If chronic migraines become an issue, it's best to seek help from a medical professional who may advise medication or other therapies to ease the triggers and pain associated with a migraine.
